Conflict EQ

Professional Bio

Dr. Irvine Nugent often describes himself as a recovering conflict coward.

Growing up in Northern Ireland during decades of civil unrest, he witnessed what happens when division hardens and communication breaks down. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong curiosity about conflict—why it escalates, why people avoid it, and how it can be transformed into something constructive.

Ironically, Irvine spent much of his early leadership career avoiding it.

After more than fifteen years in senior leadership, he came to a realization shared by many leaders: conflict is inevitable, but most of us are never taught how to navigate it well. Under pressure, conversations break down, emotions take over, and relationships strain.

That insight became the foundation of his work.

Today, Dr. Nugent is an EQ and conflict management keynote speaker, trainer, and leadership advisor who helps organizations build what he calls Conflict EQ—the capacity to handle tension, disagreement, and pressure without damaging relationships or performance.

His core message is simple: Conflict isn’t the problem. Capacity under pressure is.

Through engaging keynotes, leadership programs, and practical tools, Irvine helps leaders stay present in difficult conversations, regulate emotional reactions, and navigate disagreement without losing trust—turning workplace friction into better thinking and stronger collaboration.

A Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), Irvine blends research, storytelling, and practical tools audiences can apply immediately. He holds a Ph.D. in Management focused on leadership behavior in conflict and is a certified mediator, executive coach, and FACS coder.

He is also the author of the award-winning book Leadership Lessons from the Pub, drawing insights from the community where he grew up.

Today, he works with organizations across sectors to help leaders build the capacity to lead effectively when pressure rises and the stakes are high.
